Ukrainian Urban Awards 2019: projects of all winners and prize-winners - PRAGMATIKA.MEDIA

In Kyiv, on June 7, the prize-winners and winners of the second all-Ukrainian competition of architecture and urbanism were awarded the Ukrainian Urban Awards. PRAGMATIKA.MEDIA attended the solemn ceremony, which took place in the "Parkovy" shopping center.

Initially, the competition was supposed to award three prizes in each of the 15 nominations, but the international jury, after long meetings, excluded some categories, combined others and, in addition, did not distribute all the prizes among the remaining ones, considering that not all submitted projects are worthy of awards.

The judges awarded the Grand Prix of the competition to the civil initiative URBAN.te and KP "Misto" for the reconstruction project of the "Tsyganka" embankment in Ternopil. The record holder for the number of awards was the architectural studio SHOVK, which received as many as four prizes. Three awards were given to "Zelemin" and archimatika

Residential architecture

The concept of the project involves the development of the "city within the city" format and preservation of the height of the old neighborhood (from 4 to 9 floors). On the territory of the "Faina Town" complex, a yard closed to vehicles will be built, and its own infrastructure will be created with shops, a cafe, a supermarket, a fitness club, children's playgrounds, and a picnic area. The project also includes the construction of a 3,5 km long bicycle path.

The residential complex is located on the border of the sleeping area and the forest park. According to the architects' plan, the topography of the site delimits the space into active public and private residential areas. The hilly relief plays out in the terraced structure of the houses.

Commercial architecture

The main task of the architects was to skillfully combine practicality and comfort, as well as arrange the cottages in such a way as not to damage the trees. The decor is made in Scandinavian style using natural colors and materials. The houses have a large panoramic window through which you can admire the landscape outside.

2 place – shopping complex "Kubometr" (Dnipro) / architectural studio Nesterov

"Kubometer" is a shopping and entertainment complex consisting entirely of sea containers. Colorful container stores have separate entrances and are combined into shopping streets. On the first level there are shops, on the second - a catering area and a service area. The large open food court is made in loft style from port barrels and pallets. In hot weather, there is a micro-dispersed irrigation system for cooling, and in cold weather, heating is provided.

The project envisages the construction of a high-rise building made of massive wooden columns. The combination of two modules makes it possible to create a structure with "holes" where green terraces will be arranged.

The "On the Sky" complex should become a unique continuation of the landscape. The facade of the building, thanks to the mirror surface, simple forms and panoramic windows, somehow dissolves and integrates into the environment, and the white color emphasizes the ascetic spirit of the area.

Construction of a logistics center, a car dealership and service station, an office center, and a restaurant is planned on the territory of the site. The main goal of the project is to improve the infrastructure and reveal the potential of the site located at the intersection of important transport routes. The minimalist silhouette of the building is complemented by greenery that isolates the pedestrian and recreational area from the roadway.

Architecture of state, municipal and social facilities

Gymnasium A+ is located on the territory of the "Comfort Town" complex. The facade of the school is made in achromatic colors and contrasts with the residential buildings around it. The building does not burden city networks and receives energy without emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. An autonomous heating and air conditioning system allows you to save money.

Unrealized cultural and social objects and objects of transport

In order to avoid the use of high fences, the architects chose a plot that has natural "boundaries" - the landscape, the level difference and the railway tracks. The social center consists of two main parts: residential, for refugees, and public, open to citizens. Thus, the project should contribute to the integration of refugees into the new society.

The first level of the structure remains open both to visitors of the cultural center and to ordinary passers-by. Thus, an internal public space saturated with greenery is formed. The building also houses a cafe, a library and a lecture hall.

The architects wanted the acquaintance with Ukraine to inspire travelers. Therefore, they proposed an original project of a mini-auto terminal, located 2 km from the checkpoint across the Polish-Ukrainian border. The building is completely white and has the shape of a paper airplane (as a symbol of new opportunities). The bus terminal includes a cafe, a shop, a picnic area, a children's area, parking for cars and buses.

Renovation / reconstruction of a historical object

A shopping and office center with a small hotel occupies the territory at the corner of two central streets of Dnipro. Some of the objects on the site (income houses) were reconstructed, the foundation and ceilings were restored, the attic was added, and the facades were recreated. Modern structural glazing was used in the modern insert between two old houses. The atmosphere of the interior space of the shopping and office center should resemble the cozy courtyard of the old Yekaterinoslav.

The hotel is located in the building of the Austro-Hungarian bank in the historical part of Lviv. The project is based on the idea of maximum preservation of the authenticity of the building and its planning structure. All preserved elements have been restored and are delicately combined with modern design. The theme of the bank has been preserved and developed in the design of the public premises of the hotel.

In the work on the design of the new shell of the M17 gallery, the architects relied on minimalistic solutions and computational design methods. The basis of the formation is a square turned by 45 degrees, which is a reference to the Suprematist artist Kazimir Malevich. At night, the perforated facade is illuminated from the inside.

The architects resorted to delicate reconstruction, trying to preserve all the old parts of the complex and add only the necessary new elements. In addition, the authors of the project decided to use VR technologies to give each visitor the opportunity to see how everything was in reality. The Military Museum combined a hotel, a restaurant, a military memorial, a library, and a museum.

In order to save an outstanding object of cultural heritage from destruction, the architects proposed to turn the former brewery into an attractive public and cultural space. The project involves demolishing all outbuildings that hinder the perception of the historic building, restoring the main building, adding elevators and ramps for groups of visitors with reduced mobility, and building new structures with their own functions.

The proposed project should be a compromise between the key method of restoration (the main motto of which is "restoration must stop where the hypothesis begins") and the desire of local residents to return Zholkovsky Castle to its original historical appearance. The authors of the project want to endow the construction of the 16th century. modern utilitarian functions to ensure capitalization of the object.

Urban space and landscape

The idea of transforming an abandoned site on the bank of the Ternopil pond belonged to the public initiative URBAN.te and was supported by local authorities. The project involved turning the embankment into a space for recreation by various social and age groups. Among the main points of attraction: an amphitheater on the shore, a pier for boats, observation decks, a skate park, a dry fountain, a green beach, a structure with toilets, changing rooms and showers, a children's and volleyball court. The main idea was that every visitor could find his place in the embankment space.

The authors of the project turned a completely parked street into a cozy space connecting Tamozhennaya Ploshchad with Pekarskaya Street. Sidewalks were significantly widened and protected from illegal parking of private cars (two parking zones were created for them). The roadway was paved with basalt paving stones. Bicycle parking lots were also installed, new lighting was installed, and new trees and bushes were planted.

The initiative for the reconstruction of Square 21 belonged to the residents of Dobropol. The authors of the project deliberately placed the public space in the depth of the square in order to preserve all the trees. The space is made of terrace board (pine) treated with protective oil and thermal pine. In the renovated square, it is possible to hold thematic events (film screenings, festivals, master classes, meetings).

Urban space and landscape (unrealized project)

The main idea of the project is to preserve the historical landscape of the park and at the same time create a new mood. Landscape architects proposed to make a branched network of paths with wooden flooring, convenient for the movement of users with limited mobility. Water flowing down the slopes accumulates in the system of streams and lakes. The authors of the project suggested planting more cultural plants along the main pedestrian paths.

2 place – Pobedy Park (Nikolaev) / studio M3 Architects

Pobedy Park in Mykolaiv is one of the main places of recreation for citizens. The architects proposed to transform it: to make a river embankment with promenades, a fountain, pontoons, small shops, hidden in the middle of green massifs, and nearby to equip gazebos for family recreation. The project also involves the restoration of the summer theater and cinema, the creation of an observation deck.

The project envisages the division of the park into two parts - one will recreate the historical layout of the territory (fountain, retaining wall of the terrace with a grotto, baths and a park with alleys), the other will have a modern layout. The two parts of the park are separated by the river Svynya. The implementation of the project should turn the abandoned park into a new point of attraction and recreation for residents.

The complex "Mistechko Pidzamche" - "New Fort" (Lviv) / AVR Development

The project of the residential complex is part of the revitalization strategy of the industrial zone in Lviv. Some of the workshops on this territory were built in the Polish era, these structures, rich in high-quality architectural elements, will be integrated into the modern facades of residential buildings. Residential buildings will receive pitched roofs and chimneys. Houses located inside the quarters will have variable storeys and green terraces.

2 place – residential microdistrict INTEGRITY (Kyiv) / büro A24D

The concept is based on research, according to which most people would prefer to live in a small village rather than in a city. With the help of the INTEGRITY project, the architects tried to create an equal relationship between society, nature and construction, in order to get an ecological and high-tech living environment.

Architectural lighting

The main task of the project is to illuminate the main building of the square, the Cathedral, without placing equipment on its facade and the facades of nearby houses. Illumination should add a special night atmosphere and attractiveness to the city. The uniqueness of the project lies in the comprehensive approach and the beginning of a systematic program for the architectural illumination of the old part of the city.

The Greek Park lighting project includes three zones: the active Main park, the Relax-family park and the romantic Wonderland. The lighting of the implemented first zone is spectacular: tree crowns are dynamically illuminated, smoothly changing shades. In the Relax-family park zone, a children's playground with interactive lighting is designed, that is, children can influence the content. In the third zone, the effect of a "breathing forest" is created with the help of media dynamic canopy lighting and audio accompaniment.

Innovations in construction

1 place – modern skate park (Kyiv) – in.Lab architects

The proposed project is a structure that should be integrated into the park named after Pushkin. All tribunes, benches and simulators are designed in the same style, so they are harmoniously combined with each other. The main structure of the skate park is a pavilion made of modular elements that can be used for events.

The parklet is designed to be placed on a typical street with buildings along the red line and trees planted on the sidewalk. The parklet has a place to sit down and rest, a surface for snacking, drinking tea or coffee, as well as elements for placing greenery in flower beds or pots. In addition, there are parking spaces for bicycles.
