"Thousands of doors of Odessa" is a joint project of Urban Institute, 4City, "Architecture of Odessa", which started in early February 2019. Goal to catalog and restore antique doors.

"Proactive attention to the elements of the buildings allows us to preserve the city's identity," the founder of the project, Kostiantyn Yemelyanov, is convinced.

During the year, it was possible to catalog more than 250 Odessa buildings, in which more than a thousand doors are in need of restoration. Two have already been restored: on Troitskaya, 43-B, the doors were installed at the end of November 2019, on Koblevskaya, 9, they promise to do so in the near future. Another four are at the stage of restoration, 36 have been calculated and are awaiting financing.

Date of construction: 1903
Architect and control: Fyodor Troupianskyi, Arnold Reichenberg
Patrons of the restoration: Netpeak Group
Budget: $2,5 thousand.

"We do not deal with windows or balcony bars, because this is private property, and the door is shared property. These are more understandable objects, and a huge number of people will be able to see and use them. By the way, there are many interesting doors in the courtyards, even Odessans have not seen them. Thanks to the catalog, they are now available to everyone, and their value is obvious," Yemelyanov emphasizes.

The pro bono team creates a restoration project, prepares an estimate, works with residents and patrons. According to Yemelyanov, depending on the condition of the door, the work is estimated at 1,5 to 3,5 thousand dollars. When residents collect 50% of the required amount and patrons are found for the second half, the restoration process begins.

According to him, the city government "does not interfere." Although the project to restore ancient doors in nine Odesa buildings was planned as part of the "Public Budget" back in 2018, the promised money has not yet been allocated. Some local deputies are announcing initiatives to renew the doors. "Deputies participate in our projects on an equal footing with patrons. Let's see what happens," Yemelyanov says.

He is convinced that with each restored door the project will gain momentum. "For the image of the city, it is necessary to preserve at least the level of the first floor. An important issue is the involvement of residents. Before, they didn't even know who to turn to. Now they know," Konstantin sums up.
