Of course, the project map Luminal is not limited to Lviv. During the 12 years of the studio's work, almost 400 buildings and spaces in different corners of Ukraine have found their special lighting recipe. These are mainly large projects and complex tasks: public architecture, cultural and educational institutions, HoReCa, shopping malls and business centers, sports and medical facilities, architectural monuments, urban spaces.
Luminal's areas of work include architectural lighting, exterior, interior and industrial lighting. The team leads projects from the development of individual concepts to step-by-step implementation and installation management. Luminal workshops also develop unique individual lamps or customize lights from manufacturers, if the idea requires it.

Returning to Lviv: perhaps the rule "Home and walls help" applies to the studio, and the native city gives inspiration to get involved in new and new local projects. Or perhaps, after customers and partners appreciated Luminal's approach and the team's qualifications, and the projects themselves passed the test of time, a kind of chain reaction of orders was launched, the experience formed a reputation. It seems to be a very special and responsible feeling to be present in the market, to see how the city is changing, and to assess one's share of influence on these changes.
Someone will say: but lighting designers and technicians, engineers do not build buildings, do not create spaces or interiors with their own hands.
Yes, but to a large extent it is they who bring them to life. They do a great job of combining the building with the surrounding context, or vice versa — they create contrasts and accents with which the object "talks" to the audience, draws attention to itself. They provide recognition and a special character in the evening and at night. In the dark hours of the day, light works as an "evening architect" - this comparison Ihor Smetana often uses when explaining his work in urban spaces.
Light can greatly change the perception of color or textures, properties and even the cost of materials and decoration, interior elements.
And, finally, correctly selected light can take care of the physical and mental state of consumers. Help people communicate more, work more efficiently or rest better. Not only the concept and light idea are responsible for this, but also the spectra, color, amount and intensity of lighting, and the type of its sources.
That is why it is advisable for architects and designers to cooperate with lighting specialists already at the initial stages of the project.
When planning a conversation with the Luminal team about projects implemented in Lviv, we expected to hear a lot of numbers, prepared to look at lighting schemes, sketches and maps of the city. Instead, they talked about care and a sense of comfort and security, the principles of moderation, stability; orderliness, comfort for users of spaces.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's famous minimalist "Less is more" and "Invisibility is luxury" are important meanings for the studio. This does not mean that bright and accented, recognizable projects are not about Luminal. This is about something else: they will not do something that, for the sake of so-called "light kitsch", can spoil the idea or concept of the author-architect or designer. Something that will feel like "too much" or disrespectful to the space. Instead, appropriate "chips" will be offered, which will provide meanings that are difficult to reproduce by architecture during the day, and will tell about the object or space in a different, but also important, language of light.

The Luminal company developed complex lighting solutions for the Sheptytskyi Center, the Collegium of the University and the Church of Saint Sophia
I wonder how many students decided to enter UCU after seeing the Sheptytskyi Center? There are no statistics, but we know several such connoisseurs.
The building, whose geometry vaguely resembles a stack of books, became the face of the university. The Center will soon be 10 years old, and during this time it has not lost a single drop of relevance.
The project was developed by the German bureau Behnisch Architekten and Ukrainian architects from AVR Development і CHAPLINSKY & Associates. The aesthetics and content laid down in the architecture of the Center by Stefan Benish continued in the Student Collegium of UCU, which was opened 3 years ago. On the campus, they form an ensemble with educational buildings and the Greek-Catholic Church of Sophia — Wisdom of God; inside the church, work is still ongoing.

Ihor Smetana recalls: "When I saw Julian Chaplinskyi's first concept of the Center, created by Benish, I realized that there is nothing like this architecture in Lviv. We really wanted to join the project. Also, for us, the project is about high respect for the customer. The values, atmosphere, and social projects of UCU are a progressive Ukraine that you want to be a part of."

The main task for Luminal was to create sources of uniform, comfortable light that would not take too much attention: soft lighting of the reading rooms in the Center's library, diffused in the public spaces. The team mentions that the project required a high level of engineering, and special chandeliers for the central staircase were also designed according to Luminal drawings. CEO Luminal says: "Projects for UKU did not pay attention to any design features, instead the focus was on quality, reliability, comfort. For example, when we saw a number of materials for decoration in the Collegium, we decided that they deserved to be enhanced by light and could be "played with". In order to show their effects and strengths in space, we selected appropriate optics, reflections, and color rendering."
Currently, the Luminal team continues to work on the lighting in Hagia Sophia. Artistic works on the decoration of temple spaces with smalt mosaics and paintings are taking place slowly, and most likely will continue for several more years.
"The Church of Saint Sophia surprises many. When people go inside, they don't expect to see such a space - it's like a real miracle. With the light for the temple, we have the opportunity to experiment a lot, and this is very inspiring. In the process of experiments, we gain new practices and insights about light," says Ihor Smetana.

Superhumans Center
Providing as much value as possible is the main narrative of the lighting designers in the Superhumans project
Not the most brightly lit building in the city, but one that has been reborn visually and meaningfully.
"The main thing we thought about when designing the light in this project was to give as much value as possible. To make people in recovery feel cared for and safe. Light is able to broadcast these moments very strongly, because it affects the subconscious. Also, we were looking for solutions that are effective, but not too costly from the point of view of budgeting," explains Ihor Smetana.

Dmytro Fayanov, Luminal's business development manager, told the editors that cold shades and cold light are mostly used in the interiors of medical facilities. In the spaces of Superhumans, on the contrary, warm colors prevail and warm light is used.
"There is a lot of wood in the interior, milky shades of the walls. We managed to convince the designers and the customer that the common areas should be done in a warm color, so it will emphasize the emotion of peace and comfort, restoration in these spaces," explains Dmytro Fayanov.
In the area of the entrance group and the main hall, the lighting designers used the type of subdued light, more characteristic of HoReCa facilities, for example, hotels. The effect of comfortable ambient lighting is provided by hidden sources of various types.

On the first line of the St. Paraskeva Medical Center, specialists from the Luminal studio worked on lighting the interior spaces and territory. This task is ongoing and work on the second phase will begin soon.
The main ideas of the lighting were: to use brand colors to support the image of the institution, to outline the boundaries of the complex and to emphasize the main entrance and the central building.

Art center "Jam Factory" Jam Factory
For Jam Factory, Luminal created concepts and implemented lighting for the facade and exterior spaces, respecting the age of the building and its architectural features
A 19th-century neo-gothic building with a long history, from the Josef Kronik & Son factory and a Soviet fruit and vegetable processing plant to actual decline and a new mission.
In 2015, the emergency jam factory was bought by Harald Binder Cultural Enterprises, led by an Austrian philanthropist, a history researcher Harald Binder and after years of hard work turned into a center of modern art.
CEO Luminal recalls how he often admired the decaying architecture of the building and lamented its fate. The news that the jam factory should become a cultural and artistic center pleased the team: "When I learned more information, I realized that this project is not about business, but about the calling of Harald Binder, his sincere desire to invest in Ukrainian culture. He said a key phrase: Ukrainian culture is so underrated that when I felt it, it became my duty to do something for it. Your potential is very great, but due to the fact that Ukrainians have always been under the oppression of empires, they have never really revealed it."

For Jam Factory, Luminal created concepts and implemented lighting for the facade and exterior spaces. The reconstruction work was delicate, respecting the age of the building and its architectural features. Lighting designers supported this valuable approach.
"In order not to damage the elements of the building, not to interfere with the architectural forms and to support the atmosphere of this place, we developed a system of hidden light. Many people thought about how to install the lamps and ensure their operation and reliability, worked with carpenters. Art center is a space for events, concentration of attention, some kind of magic should happen here. Therefore, we separated the fill and accent light, made different scenes for them. The facade of Jam Factory can "speak" to people in different languages. He can say: look, I'm here, in context, on this street. There is a different architecture here, and I am not trying to drown it out. Or he can say: look, I am a cool architectural structure, built in the century before last. There was a jam factory here, and now it's a whirlwind of events — a jazz concert is taking place. I invite you to it!" — explained the choice of solutions, founder Ihor Smetana.
Tourist Information Center of Shevchenkivskyi Grove (Lviv open-air museum)
According to the idea of the project's chief architect, the space of the visitor center creates for guests a sense of familiarity with the open-air museum, focuses attention on the exhibits that can be seen through the panoramic glazing
The Lviv Skansen Visitor Center opened its doors this fall. This is the building that first greets visitors to the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life named after Klymentii Sheptytskyi. Resembling a graceful glass boat, it houses a reception and visitor information centre, conference space, workshops, a cafe and a small gift shop. The project was financed by the city, work on it continued since 2016. By design, the space focuses guests' attention on the trees and building exhibits, which are visible through the panoramic glazing, and invites you to get to know them more closely. According to the chief architect of the project Mykola Sheremety, the idea is to integrate external and internal spaces. At the same time, the room does not have the effect of an "aquarium", it has an atmosphere of safety and coziness.

For a tourist information center, the Luminal team created lighting that promotes psychological and sensory relaxation. This is a solution with track lights with a so-called "deep reflector" that minimizes glare, and linear lights with microprismatic optics. The light sources do not fall into the eye of the viewer, here again the valuable principle of the studio - "Invisibility is luxury" was reflected.
The Shevchenkivskyi Grove Visitor Center has become a popular location in a short time
"The space is light and transparent, we tried to preserve this feeling of lightness and create pleasant lighting with a comfortable spectrum and uniformity, a sufficient amount of light. Apart from the decorative chandeliers at the entrance, which set light accents, the light does not draw attention to itself. This is both a simple and well-thought-out idea at the same time," noted Ihor Smetana.
The square in front of the Opera House
Luminal Studio acted as an implementer of the architects' ideas in the project of reconstruction of the square in front of the Opera House and adapted some solutions
The square in front of the Lviv Opera House has changed several times, and each time it has caused fear among the townspeople, because habit is second nature.
The project of the square, new dry fountain and lighting was developed by the architects of the workshop 33bY Architecture, which is headed by Ivan Yunakov.
The purpose of the reconstruction was to emphasize the dominant feature of the location — the Opera House, make the square more visited and change the profile of visitors, remove attractions and small architectural forms.
According to the architects' plan, the shape of the square reads like a violin, the neck of which is adjacent to the theater. Strings of light lead visitors a hundred meters to the fountain and the building.
Studio Luminal implemented the architects' ideas and adapted some solutions. Ihor Smetana calls such work a challenge from the point of view of the social importance of the location and the fact that the project was municipal.

He states: the square has begun to be perceived differently, people spend more time here, more young people have appeared. The townspeople had concerns about the old fountain, which was removed, but the new dry fountain and the rest of the changes ended up being liked by many.
"It was important for us to balance this entire space with light so that the theater remains dominant, and at the same time create a chamber atmosphere around the perimeter, where there are rest areas. Minimalist lamps with almost imperceptible supports are selected. We also renovated the lighting of the so-called "hundred-meter square".
Sports and entertainment complex LEOLAND
The Luminal team designed the light of the exterior facade and light arch of LEOLAND, the atrium, common spaces and a number of establishments in the shopping center
The Luminal team acted as a developer and implementer of lighting for a number of spaces and facilities in this large Lviv complex - this is the external facade and light arch, atrium and public spaces, BARVY event hall, Kidlandia play area, UNIFORCE fitness complex, FAMI chefs restaurants, FAMI burger and FAMI.Italy, 88 cocktail bar. About the solutions that lighting designers chose for HoReCa establishments, we told on the pages of PRAGMATIKA.MEDIA.
The atrium in LEOLAND had a certain peculiarity: despite the scale of the complex, there was a lack of light and a narrowness of space. This could lead to visitors avoiding it and trying to spend less time in that part of the complex. "When the illuminance indicator is up to 1500-2000 lux outside during the day, and 300 inside the space, the brain does not know these numbers, but subconsciously perceives the room as a closed, basement, from which it is necessary to exit as soon as possible. We removed this negative effect," says CEO Luminal.
Thanks to the Luminal proposals, it was possible to adjust the atmosphere in some locations of LEOLAND, where there was a lack of natural light and a feeling of spaciousness
Ihor Smetana: "Thanks to the lighting solutions for the LEOLAND arch, the facade of a large building "breathes""
The idea of lighting the arch was proposed by the architect Igor Gryzlyuk. Due to the size and peculiarity of the structure, it was quite a difficult engineering task to realize it, the lighting designers worked with it for about three years.
Considering the dimensions, it was impractical to use light panel systems a la Citylight for this purpose - too high electricity consumption and the complexity of installation and maintenance of the structure. Instead, Luminal decided to use LEDPIPE 2 lamps from ES-SYSTEM Glamox. They were adapted for the project and made special niches in which the light is reflected several times. This idea required a step-by-step design and consultation with the architect and the contractor who performed the facades. The lighting scenarios of the arch also change according to the dynamic DALI protocol and can be synchronized with the events in the BARVY event hall. Thanks to this decision, the facade of a large building "breathes".
By the way, the customer had to order glass twice for the LEOLAND arch: the first one had a greenish tint, and it would have had a bad effect on the appearance of the facade. Ihor Smetana says: this is why it is so important to start cooperation and tests with lighting designers as early as possible in projects involving lighting. The second version of the glass was the "diamond" that was clean of impurities.

Although Luminal doesn't often work with residential architecture, that's exactly the case here. Ihor Smetana will announce 2 more projects with this developer in the future. The lighting technicians of the studio, together with the contractors, worked out the task of external lighting of the territory and public spaces. The founder of OK DSGN was the landscape architect in the project Olga Kryvoruchko.
The key idea that Luminal espoused for Avalon Prime was to develop comfortable scenarios that would encourage people to communicate and make the community more open. According to CEO Luminal, architects usually think a lot about what a project will look like during the day, but the evening part of the day should also be productive for residents, and area lighting models can help with this. It is the light sources that can be used to form routes, draw attention to certain spaces and services in the building — for example, to a small courtyard with a rest area.

For the outbuildings of Avalon Prime, it was important to balance the light so that it does not disturb the residents of the lower floors and corresponds to the status of the residential complex.
The complex is surrounded by buildings, its territory is closed and quite dense, at the same time it is a premium level object, and it should have been read.
Forum Lviv
Flower LED lamps are used in Forum Lviv spaces. They have "petals" that provide different optical scenarios, color and dynamics of light
In 2016, the popular shopping and entertainment center located in the heart of Lviv received high-quality light for common spaces and atriums thanks to Luminal.
Lighting designers used Flower LED lamps with a patented design. Each Flower can have a different number of petals, due to their number, turns, slopes, height different lighting effects are achieved. They can also use different optical scenarios, color, dynamics. Luminaire optics provide a very low UGR glare ratio, something that lighting professionals often compete for.
Such a set of qualities allows you to easily transform lighting in commercial and industrial buildings, and it is also an adequate solution from the point of view of budgets.
So far, the company has received an invitation to take part in the modernization of the mall, this and next year all the lighting will be replaced there. Luminal lighting designers will be able to work with new spaces of Forum Lviv: entrance groups, galleries, the surrounding area.
Restaurant "M"YASO" in the hotel Emily Resort
Restaurant "MYASO" is a joint project of 5F studio and Luminal
The "MYASO" restaurant, located on the territory of the Emily Resort recreation complex, transports guests to the atmosphere of a forest house lost in the wild nature - this was the idea of the architect, the founder of the 5F Studio office Andriy Ignatyuk. "However, this house in the woods is very well equipped and lit!" - we thought.
Ihor Smetana calls this project a puzzle with many details. Guests are led to the restaurant by a glowing pier-bridge that reacts to the movement of people. The interior uses lighting that simulates the light and shadow of branches and trees, warm LED light and custom chandeliers equipped with RGBW, which were made by Luminal in collaboration with chinbar craftsmen. The high ceiling of the building made it possible to lift almost all the lamps up. But it also added difficulties, because directing the light from a height of several meters onto the table in such a way as to illuminate the dish well and leave the guests in semi-shadow is a task that requires tests and calculations.
The bright central element is a bull's head with internal script illumination, the sculpture is also emphasized by external light sources.
The Luminal team calls lighting design for a restaurant a "puzzle with many pieces." Lighting creates an atmosphere of a forest, warmth, abundance and colorful life
Lighting in "MEAT" is not similar to other spaces of Emily Resort, but such a task was not set. The main thing was to convey the atmosphere conceived by the designers: it is an autumn forest, warmth, abundance and colorful life. But the facade is illuminated in accordance with the general concept of the architects, thus the design line of the entire complex continued. By the way, the lighting of the "forest" restaurant does not affect the surrounding nature.
Most recently, this joint project of 5F studio and Luminal received an honorable award at the International LIT Lighting Design Awards, called the "Lighting Oscar", in the category "Lighting design for bars and restaurants".

In the development of facade lighting for the LvivTech.City business campus, the studio turned to its favorite technique - high-quality hidden light
The innovative park with event and office spaces, which appeared on the site of the former "Lvivprilad" enterprise, will soon be supplemented with residential buildings. The project, started by the UDP company, was picked up by the construction company VD Group and the architectural bureau archimatika. It seems that it is the Lviv "brother" of the capital's UNIT.City in terms of mood, isn't it?
The Luminal team developed facade lighting for the building of the LvivTech.City business campus, this work included the design, installation and commissioning of lighting. The project meets LEED Gold standards.
In this case, the studio once again turned to its favorite technique - high-quality hidden light. Lighting in warm white tones is combined with the color scheme of the facade and its illumination, custom lamps are located in high and narrow niches of the facade. Due to this, the effect of soft and warm light is created in them, spilling like water.
The LvivTech.City lighting project meets LEED standards Gold
Light sources on the facade also have a high level of protection against mechanical damage and the influence of time. After one of the enemy attacks in the summer of 2023. the facade of the building was damaged, but the lamps remained intact.
The project for LvivTech.City is designed with respect for the surrounding architecture and context and does not create light pollution.
Commercial and office complex at 122 Antonovycha
Thanks to colored light of low power and dynamic protocols from Luminal, the illuminated dark facade becomes the "protagonist" of the street in the evening
Discreet modern architecture from AVR Development, the visual perception of which by passers-by can change greatly depending on the time of day.
Due to the lighting in the evening, the building becomes dominant on the street.
The commercial building with a dark matte facade is located next to another project from AVR - the glass tower of the VERTYCAL shopping center.
Ihor Smetana says: the lighting of black facades requires a special approach, not playing by the rules of physics and optics, it's easy to go wrong here. Dark color absorbs light, so it is tempting for inexperienced designers to increase the power of lamps to make the facade "work". However, it does not give a good result.
Luminal's solution was to use colored light of low power and dynamic protocols - the character of the facade illumination can change. This is what advantageously emphasized the features of the building and prevented it from getting "lost" at night.
During the day, the main attention of the viewer is attracted by the translucent structures of the VERTYCAL complex, in the evening, the eyes of passers-by are directed to the illuminated dark facade of the annex with commercial spaces.

We will conclude our walk with Luminal today with an announcement of the complex, which day by day acquires its unique face. The Helga multifunctional complex, designed by AVR Development architects, is still under construction. The property is BREEAM compliant and will include comfortable accommodation, an 'A' business center and commercial spaces.
Luminal lighting designers have shared first-hand information on what the lighting will be like in Helga.
"Backlight in Helga — one of the most interesting in Lviv," — Dmytro Fayanov
Dmytro Fayanov, Luminal's business development manager, says: "green" certification according to BREEAM added a number of requirements to what the light of this object should be.
"These are requests for energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption by automating lighting. When, for example, depending on the time of day, a smaller number of lamps work or they are dimmed. We worked out these tasks comprehensively, for the facade, external and internal lighting."
Facade lighting consists of more than 500 integrated RGBW lamps. Thanks to this, you can vary the colors of the lighting, in particular, choose pastel or deep purple or purple tones.
Luminal experts carefully selected the appropriate optics so that the facade did not dazzle the audience and looked harmonious both up close and from afar.
During the development of the idea of outdoor lighting, the surrounding context, the street and the surrounding light sources were taken into account.
"The roads located nearby are "cold" - they use light with a light temperature of about 5000 Kelvin. "Helga", on the other hand, meets with external light with a temperature of 3000 kelvins and even warmer accents of 2700 kelvins where we invite a person to linger. With our idea, we wanted to attract people at the expense of this natural desire to go to the warm. The light directs — the visitor will subconsciously want to move along this particular route.
Likewise, with light of 2700 kelvins, we focus the viewer's attention on the columns of the facade," explains Dmytro Fayanov.
The light for the main hall continues the overall concept chosen by Luminal and sensibly connects the external and internal spaces.

"The lighting in the main hall is based on HoReCa solutions. We wanted to create a slightly different atmosphere than usually prevails in business centers. Add coziness, comfort, emphasize noble and warm shades of the interior, emphasize the status of this object.
To strengthen the lighting connection of the main hall with the facade and the surrounding area, there are lamps on its ceiling that shine on a material similar to the facade decoration of Helga. These light sources also work in the same shades as the facade ones.
An interesting task was to work with the nets used in the interior and hiding communications in the hall. With the appropriate light due to reflection, they became visually less transparent," says the specialist about the details of the project.
The light of the entire complex can be controlled not only from one tablet, but also from anywhere in the world thanks to cloud access
Dmytro Fayanov noted that light control in the main hall and common areas is carried out using the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) protocol or through a DALI relay. It was important for the team to explain the potential of this solution to the architects and the customer in order for the lighting system in all Helga spaces to look complete and be effective:
"So we have the opportunity to control the light of the entire complex from one tablet. Everything is programmed automatically, the light in the hall will adapt to the astrohours and the amount of natural light.

The Luminal team is currently developing scenarios for the terrace and pergola in the multi-functional center Helga. The purpose of these spaces is also "multiple" - various events or celebrations can take place here, so they should be highlighted with light in different ways.
For this, experts plan to use RGBW light and a DMX control system.
During the time when the terrace will "rest" from the events, it will visually join the lighting of the facade and will become a pleasant accent that will invite guests to visit the new center on Knyagini Olga Street.
