Such colorful modernism. Sacred buildings of South India

/ Art /
Sabina Haubitz and Stefany Tsoch are architectural photographers from Germany who worked in southern India for several years. The photo series "Hybrid Modernism" shows us the amazing palette and architecture of local churches and chapels.

The guide of modernism in India was Le Corbusier, who spent several years here at the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru and practically built the city of Chandigarh from scratch, which became the capital of two states at the same time, Punjab and Haryana.

Multicolored churches were built much later, in the late XNUMXth and early XNUMXst centuries. They have a completely unique style, born as a result of the fusion of modernism and local aesthetics. The facades of temple buildings resemble sugar-coated gingerbread cookies. This life-affirming design attracted the attention of German photographers. See more photos in the gallery.
