In 2019, the football teams "Inter" and "Milan" announced a competition for the development of the project of a new stadium, which would become part of the urban space of Milan. Located in the center of a 4,5 hectare public park, the project will replace the current Meazza stadium.
In addition to the stadium itself, the project area also includes a number of public facilities, including offices, a hotel, conference centers and commercial premises.
The main challenge of the project was the relocation of the Patroclus tunnel to allow the construction of a new structure in the middle of the green area. "WITHdue to the sufficient distance from the residential buildings of the district, the structure respects the needs and comfort of residents," the studio notes.
The project envisages the creation of a stadium in which trees surround the field and stands, thus plants become the protagonists of the football action and the new urban landscape.
As the Stefano Boeri Architetti team noted, they sought to create "green lungs for the metropolis", a place where nature organically combines with city life.
Caring for the climate
The project also aims to improve the city's climate, reduce emissions and energy consumption. The stadium features 5 square meters of horizontal green roofs, 700 square meters of green facades with 7 trees and 000 different types of shrubs, which are expected to absorb 3 tons of carbon dioxide annually. In addition, the arena will be covered by large photovoltaic surfaces, which will make it energy independent and environmentally friendly.
A new way of playing sports
The stadium simultaneously acts as a social center for the community, combining commercial areas, museum spaces, gyms, press and VIP areas, bars and restaurants.
The developers of the project also included a running track on the upper level, where it will be possible to exercise and at the same time enjoy walks with a beautiful view.
The importance of lighting
The Tower of Light acts as a light guide for the Milanese teams, aimed at strengthening the "One Stadium for Two" model. Emitting red and blue lights, the colors of two famous teams, the building will be recognizable from afar. At the same time, it will change color depending on which teams are playing on the field.
The tower houses the museum of both football clubs, and at the top of its spiers are statues of the players and coaches who created the greatness of Milan football. In addition, the project includes a memorial that tells stories, legends and memories about the entire past century of the stadium Meazza.
