Mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski revealed details of the strategic program “Underground Shield” (Podziemna tarcza), which involves adapting the metro for civil protection needs.
The project aims to re-equip metro stations so that they can serve as shelters for over 100 residents in case of danger. The “Underground Shield” is part of a broader city initiative called “Warsaw Protects” (Warszawa Chroni), aimed at strengthening the security of the capital.
The city government, together with the fire department, is working to modernize the underground spaces. Previously unused rooms are being converted into emergency response warehouses. Thermoses, sleeping bags, stretchers and beds are already stored there. In addition, the city is purchasing thousands of power generators to provide lighting and communications in the event of a power outage.
According to the mayor, it's not about creating panic, but about increasing preparedness for different scenarios.
“We are safe, but those who are cautious are always insured,” Trzaskowski noted, adding that Warsaw is investing significantly in critical infrastructure and strengthening the defense system.
