The Verkhovna Rada registered a draft law aimed at decolonizing toponymy and streamlining the use of geographical names throughout Ukraine.

Document placed on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

According to draft law No. 7253, the naming of geographical objects that "glorify, perpetuate, promote or symbolize the occupying state or its notable, memorable, historical and cultural places, cities, dates, events, its figures, can be completely prohibited. who carried out military aggression against Ukraine and other sovereign countries, state totalitarian policy".

Thus, according to the authors, the adoption of this draft law will practically eliminate the influence of Russia on the internal politics of Ukraine and the worldview of citizens, as well as accelerate de-Sovietization and de-Russification, and contribute to the strengthening of the spirit and morals of the Ukrainian nation.

It is worth noting that after the implementation in 2015 of the Law of Ukraine "On Condemnation of Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) Totalitarian Regimes in Ukraine and Prohibition of Propaganda of Their Symbols" more than 990 settlements and 26 districts, almost 52 thousand other toponyms, 75 educational institutions were renamed , 33 railway facilities and 2 sea ports.

During this time, about 2,5 monuments containing the propaganda of the totalitarian regime were also dismantled. Currently, the renaming of Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad regions is under question.
