The square was named in honor of the Russian poet's visit to Zaporizhzhia in 1820, and the sculpture, created by local masters Boris Chas and Fyodor Zaitsev, was installed in 1999 as part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Pushkin's birthday.
By the way, in June and July, two proposals appeared on Zaporizhzhia's e-petitions website: the first - regarding the renaming of Putin's Park to the Park named after the Hetman of the Zaporizhian Army Pylyp Orlyk, the second - regarding changing the name of Pushkin Square to Ukrainian International Legion Square.
