The man was brought to justice, but the court proceedings lasted for three years, write Mad White. The owner of the plot tried to appeal the mayor's decision to collect a fine from him. Currently, the administrative court rejected the appeal against the decision of the appeal commission of local self-government, leaving unchanged the decision of the mayor of the city of Sopot to impose an administrative fine. The decision is final.
The City Hall of Sopot was informed about the incident in the spring of 2019. The dead trees caused concern among local residents. Based on the results of the inspection, the city prosecutor's office reported the possibility of a crime and started administrative proceedings.
An examination by dendrologists showed that the trees, including alders, birches and poplars, were uprooted and poisoned with herbicide.
"It is unacceptable for an investor to destroy trees on the territory for the sake of profit. Especially since it was possible to build buildings on this site without doing this," said the mayor of Sopot, Jacek Karnovsky.
For the destruction of 39 trees, the plot owner is obliged to pay 214 zlotys (about 391 dollars), of which 50 zlotys will be paid immediately. Collection of the remaining amount - PLN 154 - has been suspended for 345 years due to the fact that the degree of damage to 60 trees does not exclude their viability.
