The mayor of the city, Gennady Trukhanov, announced the need to rename toponyms symbolizing Russia.

The first to disappear are street names that are in no way related to the history of Odessa. informed he is on his Facebook page. In particular, we are talking about Novomoskovsk, Borodinsk, Kursk, Voronezh and Chapaev.

"Every day the words "fraternal people" look more and more hypocritical and cynical. Odesa suffered its losses in this war. And we do not want to have anything to do with the state, which today is trying to erase our city, our country from the earth," said the mayor of Odesa.

Also, 19 streets associated with the totalitarian regime of the Soviet Union are about to be renamed. And 24 streets are waiting for names to be confirmed in Ukrainian.

As Trukhanov noted, wherever possible, historical names or names directly related to the struggle against the war unleashed by Russia will be returned to Odessa streets.

"I believe that the modern history of Ukraine and Odesa should include the names and countries that lead us to Victory in one way or another. That's why Odessa can - and should! – Heroiv Street of Mariupol and Great Britain Square will appear. And, of course, we will create a memorial on the site of the large ATO Soldiers' Square, where the names of all Odessans who gave their lives for Ukraine will be immortalized," Trukhanov sums up.

Currently, the issue of street renaming is dealt with by a toponymic commission. In the near future, new names should be approved at a session of the city council.
