The square was chosen because it houses a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. A total of 104 saplings are three- to seven-year-old trees. They were provided by the "Association of the Righteous of the World".
"Each tree is dedicated to Ukrainians and representatives of other nationalities who, during the occupation of Odessa, risked their lives and sheltered Jews, saving their lives. And today, the children and grandchildren of these people can come to this alley and remember their heroic relatives," noted the head of the Association, Roman Shvartsman.
Righteous Among the Nations is an honorary title awarded by the State of Israel to those who saved Jews from destruction during the Second World War in the territory of Europe occupied by the Nazis.
