The "Hoekse lijn" used to be a railway connection between Rotterdam and Hook van Holland, which is part of the municipality of Rotterdam. In recent years, the railway line to the seaside city of South Holland has been converted into a metro line.
Work on the conversion of the line began in 2017, but the project turned out to be financially expensive, so the process dragged on for years.
"We have invested heavily in this, so now we have the first subway in Europe that goes straight down to the beach," said Rotterdam municipal councilor Vincent Karremans.
The project of the station took into account the climatic conditions near the sea. Special measures were needed to protect against sand, wind and salt from sea water. The station itself is located only 40 meters from the ocean.
