In Zhytomyr, ongoing repairs of the road surface and sidewalks on Kyivska Street have begun - on a section of 850 meters between Nebesnoy Sotni and Ivan Mazepa streets.

This section is part of the “Movement without Barriers” route, which involves creating an accessible environment for people with disabilities, transmits Bike City community.

As part of the renovation, it is planned to lower curbs at pedestrian crossings, install convenient exits, lay tactile tiles for people with visual impairments, as well as repair the road surface, replace manholes, grates, and curb stones.

However, it has become known that the work is being carried out without approved project documentation and prior public discussions. This raises concerns about the quality and appropriateness of the implemented solutions.

The community also draws special attention to the lack of consideration for cycling infrastructure. On the sidewalk of the odd-numbered side of Kyivska Street, a main cycling route No. 3 is provided, approved by the Concept for the Development of Cycling Infrastructure of the Zhytomyr Community back in December 2024. In addition, according to current state building codes and traffic regulations, people with disabilities who use wheelchairs also have the right to use bicycle paths.

Despite this, the current repair project does not provide for the construction of bicycle infrastructure. Although, according to the current nomenclature of repair works, current repairs allow the construction of bicycle paths. Similar practices are already being implemented in other cities of Ukraine - Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Lviv and Kyiv.

It should be noted that the work is being carried out by a construction contractor, and the total cost of the project is UAH 13,5 million.
