In Venice, due to low tide and lack of rainfall for several weeks, the canals have dried up, although inundation and flooding are more typical for the city.

According to write Reuters, if the main problem for Venice is usually flooding, now due to a combination of factors, the city is faced with the drying up of canals. In particular, this was influenced by the lack of rain, low tide and sea currents.

Currently, gondolas, water taxis and ambulances cannot pass through some canals. According to scientists and environmental groups, less than half of the snow fell in the Alps than usual.

So, in the course of Italy's longest river, the Po, which flows from the Alps in the northwest of the country to the Adriatic, there is currently 61% less water than usual at this time of year.

Last July, Italy declared a state of emergency for the areas surrounding the Po River, which accounts for about a third of the country's agricultural production, and which has suffered its worst drought in 70 years.

50 days of rainy weather are needed to restore normal water levels in reservoirs in north-west Italy, they say National Research Council (CNR).
