Two Rembrandt paintings of a husband and wife have been accidentally discovered in a private collection in Great Britain.

About the edition of the Financial Times.

While carrying out a routine assessment in a private collection, Christie's auction house experts came across paintings by a Dutch master of the XNUMXth century, whose works are worth millions of dollars.

Ancestors of the family, who wished to remain incognito, bought a couple of small oil paintings in 1824 at a Christie's auction.

The portraits, painted just as Rembrandt was building his reputation as a sought-after artist, depict Jan Willems van der Pluym and his wife, Japgen Karelsja. This couple was related to the family of the artist.

Christie's sent the photos for analysis to experts at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the world center for Rembrandt scholarship. There, too, they came to a conclusion about the originality of the paintings.

The 20cm tall portraits will now go on sale at Christie's London showrooms on July 6. The preliminary cost of the works is £5-8 million per pair.
