The project was implemented after several years of delays and agreements between city authorities, engineers, and designers, write Dezeen.
The line connects various transportation branches and provides cross-connection for the densely populated Midtown area.
The architectural concept of the stations was developed by Arcadis and AtkinsRéalis in collaboration with the studios Daoust Lestage Lizotte Stecker, NORR and Dialog.

Underground stations were divided into three types: corner, built-in, and pavilion. In particular, built-in stations are integrated directly into the city infrastructure and can withstand construction above them or be combined with neighboring buildings.

Despite their different formats, all stations share a common visual identity, filled with natural light during the day and illuminated at night. According to lead designer Lisa D'Abbondanza, the spaces were designed to make movement intuitive and comfortable for users.

Construction of the line began in 2011, and the project itself has been planned since the 2000s. Despite a delay of almost six years, it is one of the longest underground subway lines built in Canada and the United States in the 21st century.

The project involved modern engineering solutions, including phased excavation and technology to minimise the impact on city traffic. At one site, a 500-tonne historic building was even moved to make way for Mount Dennis Station, which will eventually be transformed into a community centre.

Some stations have been supplemented with new public spaces, such as squares and bicycle parking. Some of the underground platforms have also been designed as open spaces with modern ventilation.

The above-ground sections of the line have been given green tracks, a first in Canada. The new line is expected to reduce travel times and improve connectivity, particularly towards Toronto Pearson Airport.

According to the project authors, Line 5 will gradually change the urban space and influence the development of areas along the route.
As a reminder, the architectural offices Hariri Pontarini Architects and Snøhetta were chosen to design new complex Ontario Science Center in Toronto.
