About this reports the Embassy of Ukraine in Finland and Iceland.
Officially, the square has a double name in Old Icelandic and Icelandic “Kænugarður/Kýiv-torg” respectively. The transliteration of the square in English is “Kyiv Square”.
The city's Planning and Transport Council unanimously decided to name the square in honor of Kyiv at a meeting on April 27, 2022. In this way, the capital of Iceland expresses its support and emphasizes the age-old connection between the two countries.
"We are sincerely grateful to Reykjavík and its residents for their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian cities. "Ukrainian flags have been flying in front of Reykjavik City Hall since the first days of the large-scale invasion of the Russian army," the message on the embassy's website reads.
By the way, Kyiv Square is located at the intersection of Garðastræti and Túngata streets, where the Russian embassy is located nearby.
