New government district being built in Oslo on site of 2011 terror attack

Norwegian studio Nordic Office of Architecture has designed a new government district in Oslo at the site of the July 22, 2011 terrorist attack that killed eight people.

Local offices Haptic, Scenario, and Id Interiørakritektur & Design also worked on the project, transmits Dezeen.

The tragic events associated with the place have determined the approach to design. Thus, the space must be both open to the public and safe.

“The new government quarter is conceived as a ‘design for democracy’ — it returns openness to the political center of the city and at the same time unites ministries in a common space,” said studio co-founder Gudmund Stokke.

According to the architects, the complex will include five new and two renovated buildings, built mainly from local larvikite stone and wood. So far, three buildings and some of the public spaces have been completed within the first phase.

The buildings will be connected by bridges, atriums, and common areas.

The new A-Block and the renovated Høyblokken will be key elements. Their appearance symbolizes the different stages of the development of Norwegian statehood, from the post-war period to modern social democracy.

A-Block is distinguished by its geometric shape and large glass surfaces. Inside, a 51-meter atrium will be equipped with a large-scale installation by artist Auti Pieski.

Other buildings, including D-Block, will form a more subdued backdrop to the complex. It features a sculptural wooden staircase with an intricate shape.

The project will also create public spaces, including a museum and an education center. In addition, existing areas will be renovated and a new park, Regjeringsparken, will be developed.

Let us remind you that in Oslo a monument was unveiled daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, who became the wife of King Harald the Harsh of Norway.
