A giant mural depicting opera diva Maria Callas has appeared in the Greek city of Kalamata, write Euronews.
Author of the mural, artist KLE (Kleomenis Kostopoulos), explains that this is not just a portrait of the singer, but an allegorical image of the city itself. Callas' father had roots in the Messinian region, which inspired the artist. At the same time, he emphasizes that the work is titled "Kalamata", not "Maria Callas".
According to the artist's idea, the singer's dress symbolizes the prosperity, generosity, and blessed land of the region. The composition also uses tree branches, birds, and agricultural motifs as a connection between man and nature.
The mural was complicated by bad weather, which made the work slow. The artist used brushes, spray paint, and a crane to paint the huge wall.

The city council notes that the mural has already become a new tourist attraction. According to Deputy Mayor for Strategic Planning and Climate Neutrality Vasilis Papaevstatiou, people come specifically to see the work, take photos and actively share the images on social media, popularizing the city.
The project is also linked to Kalamata's plan to become climate neutral by 2030. The mural aims to combine tradition, art, and the region's modern cultural identity.
