French archaeologists carried out security and rescue excavations in Marseille at the site of the construction of the future school. On an area of about 2700 square meters, they discovered an early medieval necropolis consisting of approximately 95 burials.

As stated in message on the website of the National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research of France, three graves contained the remains of mothers and children, and in one case the child was holding her mother's hand.

Archaeologists have noted that the discovered burials are simple burial pits in which the dead are placed lying on their backs. In many cases, there is evidence that the deceased were dressed or wrapped in a shroud.

Along with the remains, modest ornaments made of copper, bronze and iron, dating from the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries AD, were sometimes found. However, the necropolis probably continued to be used until the XNUMXth century.

In addition to the medieval burial complex, the researchers also discovered traces of the life of people from the end of the Middle or the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (around 1400-1300 BC). They include pottery, various types of pits, one of which contained a child's burial.
