About this reports the edition Chas Chernihivskyi.

According to archaeologist Ihor Ignatenko, the moat was part of a defensive structure that was built back in the days of Kyivan Rus. He suggests that the moat was used approximately in the middle of the XNUMXth century. during princely feuds that turned into a civil war.

"Excavations have shown that the suburb of ancient Chernigov was surrounded by a real defensive moat. In ancient times, the ground level in this place was higher than the current one, and therefore the depth and width of the ditch were greater than what we can see in the photo. To the south of the ditch (toward the intersection of Lubetska Street and Hetman Ivan Mazepa Street), there was supposed to be a rampart built from the soil removed when digging the ditch. A wooden fortress wall was supposed to stand on top of the rampart," noted Ihor Ignatenko.
