"Who knows, please explain the difference between: a square - a square, a street - an avenue... I could not find legal regulations regarding the clear definition of these terms," the official's post reads.

In their comments, urban planning experts note that the toponyms "square" and "maidan" are synonyms. Someone notes that there can be only one square in the city, someone suggests abandoning the token "square" in official names.
"For the name of the undeveloped part of the settlement, preference should be given to the word "maidan", and the lexeme "square" in this sense should be used as a less frequently used synonym. The only name for a place for sports and other activities is a playground," says community member Inna Kryzhanovska.
"Maidan among the Turkic peoples means "place in the center". Fairs were usually held there, and in many nations this word now means bazaar. Accordingly, this word came to us from the time of the Tatar-Mongol yoke and became fixed in the designation of central squares", - answers Taras Mykolaenko under the post.
"In my opinion, the Maidan is the central, largest square of the city. Probably, there cannot be several Maidans in the city. But that's just my subjective opinion," suggests user Andriy Melnychenko.

However, there are still differences between the street and the avenue, users think.
"The difference between a street and an avenue is as follows: a street is found not only in the city, but also in the countryside. Avenue - only in the city. The street can be a dead end, the avenue is always through. The street can be pedestrianized, the avenue always has a carriageway.
The avenue is often wide, long and straight, the street may have turns.
A street can smoothly flow into another street, the avenue has a large intersection at its beginning and end, a square, an intersection or even adjoins the city border," Inna Kryzhanovska thinks.
