About this reported the Deutsche Bahn.
The pilot project called Lightgate was launched at the stations: Alexanderplatz, Hackescher Markt, Friedrichstraße, Hermannstraße, Bellevue and Hauptbahnhof.
The principle of operation is based on the work of sensors that are installed along the track and analyze the number of passengers in the cars, interrupting the light beam. This information is transmitted to the screens on the platform, which show the occupancy.
Green color shows that there is a lot of free space in the car, yellow indicates average occupancy, and red color means that there is little space.
The goal of the project is to collect new data on the use of trains during peak hours for further improvement of the service.
"Lightgate" is financed by Deutsche Bahn together with the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and should last several years. The total cost of the project is 900 euros.
