Ghent's local authorities have announced plans to turn Groot Vleeshuis, a XNUMXth-century covered market, into a bicycle park.
According to an official statement, this will help speed up restoration work, as the building is currently in poor condition and therefore closed to visitors. Despite the new function, they promise that the attraction will continue to work for both tourists and locals.

"We can return the building to its former glory sooner than originally planned. We will return it to the residents of Ghent with a new function. Everyone who comes to the center of Ghent will be able to enjoy the sight again», - notes Hafsa El-Bazioui, head of the facilities management board.
The building has an open layout, which will make its adaptation for bicycle parking quite easy. It is also expected that this decision will help free pedestrian spaces from spontaneous parking.
According to the municipality of Ghent, Groot Vleeshuis will serve these purposes for 15 years. A public toilet was also added to the project.
The estimated cost of the reconstruction is 7,5 million euros.
