The president of the Center Pompidou, Laurent Le Bon, announced the closure due to ambitious new expansion plans for the facility. While the Beaubourg gallery is closed, the institution will collaborate with the Grand Palais and the Louvre on a number of projects.
As part of the reconstruction, the Pompidou Center will expand by 20 square meters. m. of space currently occupied by unused bus parks. Cinemas will be located in these premises, as well as areas for multidisciplinary exhibitions and a section of contemporary art.
A "new generation center" will be created on the first level on the north side, and a large restaurant will be opened on the south side instead of the third and fourth exhibition galleries.
The public information library will remain on three levels. The National Museum of Modern Art will remain on the fourth and fifth levels, but will be completely renovated.
According to Le Bon, the terrace with an area of 1500 square meters. m., which offers "one of the most beautiful views of western Paris", will be opened to the public for the first time on the seventh floor.
A competition for an architectural project will start on May 12. At the end of the year, the six best projects will be selected, and the winner will be selected in 2024. The gradual closure of the Center Pompidou will take place in the fall of 2024 before the final closure in the summer of 2025. The cost of technical modernization provided by the French state is 262 million euros.
It should be noted that the National Museum of Modern Art of France, designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 1977, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2027.
