About the initiative tells media The Mayor.
During the project, urban planners will try to arrange multifaceted agriculture in urban conditions. In order to realize the goal, the local authorities have started a search for candidates for the position of head of the urban farm in the Kübebirg ecoregion, which is currently under construction.
Martine Hemmer, head of the Kirchberg Fund, a non-governmental organization involved in the construction of Kübeberg, explained that the urban gardening in the new district will be indicative of the development of more such initiatives in Luxembourg.
It is also part of Luxembourg's National Urban Farming Strategy, which aims to bring food production closer to urban centers and promote a more cyclical and sustainable diet.
According to the Kirchberg Fund's schedule, urban farming should start as early as 2024, despite the fact that residents will not move to the new area until 2028.
In addition to producing plant-based food, the urban farm will raise livestock such as chickens and rabbits, tend an orchard, and be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of nearby green spaces.
According to Ms. Hemmer, the urban farm will also play an educational role, focusing on the topics of ecology, preservation of Luxembourg's landscape heritage.
The new district will be built on an area of 33 hectares and will have a multimodal traffic plan with cars only allowed at certain crossings. It will cost around 77 million euros and provide more than 3 housing units.
One of the unique features of the area is that it will be integrated with the existing green spaces and will ensure a harmonious fusion of nature with the urban environment.
