Located in the Dorset countryside, the two-storey residential structure is distinguished by its playful yet understated exterior, which combines patterned red brickwork with bright green details.
The Red House by David Kohn Architects was selected by the jury as the 2022 winner in recognition that it "meets the expectations of a house in a beautiful environment".

According to an official statement, "the owners wanted a home that could be adapted for future needs." Features of the design are rounded corners, the presence of handrails and an elevator, and the absence of door handles. The architects installed thick walls and deep eaves, leaving the concrete exposed to maximize the thermal stability of the interiors, and replaced deep concrete foundations with steel piles to reduce carbon footprint.

“An aesthetic and environmentally friendly building with forward-looking functionality draws on architectural references from [William] Morris to [James] Sterling – with many surprises that were approved by all jury members,” said jury chair and architect Taro Tsuruta.

The RIBA House of the Year Award was established in 2013 and is awarded to the best new house or extension designed by an architect in the UK.
