The Powder Tower in Lviv will remain a space for the architectural community

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed in Lviv between the Lviv Regional Council and the National Union of Architects of Ukraine regarding the further use of the Powder Tower.

The document has to settle the long-standing dispute around the monument and create legal grounds for the further work of the Lviv Regional Organization of the National Society of Ukrainian Art History in this space.

The Powder Tower remains in the joint ownership of the territorial communities of the Lviv region. The Lviv Regional Council plans to consider the issue of including the monument in the list of objects that can be transferred to creative unions for rent without an auction. After the necessary approvals and assessment of the object, the parties plan to conclude a long-term preferential lease agreement. The specific terms of the agreement will be determined by the deputies of the Regional Council.

At the same time, the NSAU undertakes to cease and withdraw judicial and extrajudicial disputes regarding the use of the Powder Tower.

The Powder Tower is an architectural monument of national importance. The Union emphasizes that the object requires proper care, restoration, and responsible use. At the same time, it is planned to continue to be used as a professional and cultural center for architects and the public - for meetings, exhibitions, discussions, and educational events.

The next joint task of the parties will be to find resources for the preservation and restoration of the monument, as well as the development of its professional, public, and cultural life.

The NSAU noted that the signing of the memorandum was the result of a dialogue between the parties and should put an end to the long-standing confrontation around the Powder Tower.

Recall that conflict around The Powder Tower became more acute in 2024, when the Lviv Regional Council refused to extend the lease agreement with the Lviv Regional Organization of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine, which had been using the premises for over 60 years.

The dispute later reached the courts. The architects appealed the regional council's decision, emphasizing that they had maintained and preserved the historic building on their own for decades.

The Powder Tower is an architectural monument of national importance and one of the few surviving defensive structures of medieval Lviv. It has remained an important space for the city's architectural community for many years.
