Five Expolight projects won the most prestigious lighting design competition, the IES Illumination Awards

Ukrainian studio Expolight has gained another international recognition: five of its projects have become winners of the legendary lighting design competition IES Illumination Awards, founded in 1906 in the USA. For the team, which consistently works to promote Ukraine in the world, this is another significant step towards strengthening its positions in the global lighting arena.

“It is very pleasing that most of the awarded works are our art-sensual projects, in which we incorporate not only a professional lighting component, but also a powerful sensual part,” notes Expolight founder Mykola Kabluka.

He separately noted two landmark projects among the winners:

"Heroes' Cross": a symbol of light, memory, and invincibility

The memorial installation "Heroes' Cross" in Vyshgorod, which has been recognized for the second time at the IES Illumination Awards, has long become an international symbol of the struggle of light against darkness and honoring the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine. The project has a number of awards from various world awards.

"I created the "Heroes' Cross" as a symbol of the struggle of light against darkness, resilience, and an indomitable spirit. This is our tribute to the fallen heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine, and support for those who continue to carry their cross today, doing everything possible for our future," says Kabluka.
For a deeper dive into the context of the "Cross of Heroes", the team also created a separate website — crossofheroes.org, which reveals the symbolism and content of the project.

"Soul": an installation that shone in two countries

The second winner was the art installation "Soul", created by the Kabluka Light&Digital Sculptures team. It reflects the living creative energy of the Ukrainian people, embodied through light.

In Ukraine, "Soul" first came to life during Kyiv Design Week on the facade of St. Nicholas Church, one of Kyiv's most prominent architectural landmarks. The project was implemented in partnership with Toronto-Kyiv, in particular with Khrystyna Stykhar and Yuriy Kryvosheya.

The second showing took place in Zurich during Zurich Design Week. There, the installation illuminated the facade of the city's oldest train station, creating a symbolic "cultural bridge" between Ukraine and Switzerland.

"It is a great honor and inspiration for us to create projects that announce Ukrainian talent to the world and establish Ukraine on the international light arena," concluded Mykola Kabluka.
