The Norwegian architectural bureau Snøhetta has published renderings of a project to transform the territory of a former industrial quarry in Sweden into a green residential area.

The picturesque Landvettersjøen lake is located 15 minutes from Gothenburg. The Wendelstrand project envisages the creation of a residential settlement with infrastructure - preschool facilities and a community center - on its shore.

The territory of the quarry comes close to the shore of the lake. After the owners of the enterprise dismantle all the equipment, the landscape will be revitalized. On an area of more than 2,5 thousand square meters, it is planned to break up a green pedestrian zone, the center of which will be the Lakehouse - a unique structure constructed from environmentally friendly materials, mainly wood.

Lakehouse is a place for social gatherings and recreation. Image source: snohetta.com

Lakehouse will function as a place for residents to meet and relax, as well as a platform for public events. Snøhetta architects have designed a building that will fit harmoniously into the surroundings, and the open square will have a cafe and places to relax in the fresh air.

For residential buildings, Snøhetta offers a number of sustainable solutions. The slopes of the roofs of the buildings, oriented to the sunny side, will be equipped with photo panels, and those that are in the shade will be covered with plants and lawn. Installations for collecting rainwater are also planned to be integrated into the system.

The client of the project is the large Swedish developer Next Step. Construction works are planned to start already this year.
