As stated in message organizers, the city was recognized for creating pocket parks.
The city has set itself the task of creating 50 m² of green spaces in seven years. First, spaces that can be quickly transformed were identified: small squares, parking lots, along canals and at roundabouts. The public was also involved in the discussions.
In two years since the start of the program, they managed to complete half of what was planned. Planners use a Quick Win approach, which provides for the creation of sustainable landscaping with simple methods. The selected location is first drained, and then the water permeability of the soil is restored.
Thus, several mini-parks, flower meadows and green roundabouts appeared in the city, where various trees, berry bushes, wild flowers and perennial plants were planted.
The prize winners were awarded in Paris. In total, 13 countries participated in the competition. It is noted that the city of Beringen in Belgium won in 2020, and Nantes in France in 2021.
A pocket park is a small landscaped park area, comparable in size to a tennis court. Here you can make an appointment, do yoga, sit with a book or drink coffee in the shade of trees. Most often, such mini-parks are created in areas with spontaneous parking, on the site of landfills or simply cluttered territory.
