According to the artist, the idea for the work came after photographing people on a train station escalator. The central image was the metaphor of an endless elevator, reflecting the continuous movement of society.

The painting depicts real people — military personnel, journalists, artists, and random passengers who simultaneously found themselves on the escalator.
“In addition to the documentary component — the real situation and performances that really took place — this work is also a metaphor for our society. From the beginning, I said: the escalator is endless, and we all move on it,” Lesya Khomenko noted.

The composition refers to the architecture of the station and at the same time symbolizes the collective movement of Ukrainians who together defend the country and preserve democratic values.

The work “Movement” will continue the artist’s solo exhibition at the PinchukArtCentre, which opens on August 28.
