The project is part of the collection “Ukrainian Artists Through the Ages.” It is dedicated to female artists of the sixties, including Alla Horska, Halyna Zubchenko, Lyubov Panchenko, Halyna Sevruk, and Lyudmila Semikina.
These artists not only actively participated in the dissident movement, for which they were persecuted, but also defended feminist ideals, fighting for women's rights in the society of the time. The project introduces the biographies, creative paths, and works of these artists.
The work of Galina Sevruk
The Sixties movement was a literary, artistic, and socio-political movement that emerged among the Ukrainian intelligentsia in the late 1950s and early 1970s. It emerged during the brief period of weakening Soviet control, known as the “thaw,” and aimed to protect Ukrainian culture and language from Russification.
“Boosted by the so-called ‘Khrushchev Thaw,’ these young artists and intellectuals rose up primarily through culture. Despite the isolation of the USSR, the sixties sought to be free in their self-expression, like their colleagues on the other side of the Iron Curtain. But in Ukraine, this meant a direct confrontation with the KGB secret police,” the project description says.

“Ukrainian Artists Through the Ages” is part of the broader project “Ukraine is Here,” which is implemented on the Google Arts & Culture platform in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
The initiators hope that, thanks to interactive exhibitions, 3D models of artifacts, video and audio materials, this project will contribute to the preservation and popularization of Ukrainian cultural heritage at the international level.
