"City of living walls": Kyiv implements a vertical greening strategy

/ Urbanism /

The capital city authorities launched an initiative to green the facades of buildings in order to increase the area of green spaces in the urban environment.

As part of the "City of Living Walls" project, the first building to receive a green facade was the administration building of the Department of Ecology of the KMDA. informed head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources Oleksandr Vozniy.

According to him, even in conditions of limited funding, this approach can improve the environmental condition of the capital. In particular, vertical gardening improves air quality by absorbing pollutants. Also, "green" facades create a cooling effect both from the outside and from the inside.

"There is a study that indicates that on streets with vertical landscaping, the content of nitrogen dioxide is 40% lower, and suspended particles (dust) are 60% lower... It has been scientifically proven that in the summer indoors with vertical landscaping, the temperature is on average 5 degrees lower in compared to a similar room without a green wall", - explains Oleksandr Vozniy.

He notes that the most optimal option for landscaping facades in the capital is the use of Vichy grapes, as the plant is extremely undemanding and has the ability to grow quickly.

"It is an ideal coating for large areas of fences, unattractive concrete blocks, fences and walls. Due to the tendrils, this vine easily clings to walls, so it does not require special support. And it is distinguished by rapid growth - the annual growth of shoots is 1-3 meters. No less important is the fact that Vichy grapes are very easy to grow, so even an amateur gardener can cope with this task," says the ecologist.

In the future, they plan to use Vichy grapes more and more often in landscaping projects in the city, Oleksandr Vozniy noted. He calls on all willing citizens to join this initiative:

"I invite everyone to join the eco-initiative "City of Living Walls" — to plant vichy trees on their homes and offices to make our city even greener."

It is worth noting that vertical gardening continues to gain popularity in the world. Green facades can be seen on the streets of London, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, etc. Earlier we wrote about how implement this approach in Vienna.
