"The city will turn into a village." Is it realistic to arrange city meadows instead of lawns in Kyiv

Ecologist about grass cutting, creation of city meadows and greening of the capital.

Oleksandr Vozny, head of the Department of Ecology in an interview The Village Ukraine answered the question whether it is possible not to mow lawns in the city at all:

"Unfortunately, that is not possible. If we stop caring for lawns, the city will turn into a kind of village. Weeds can grow up to a meter in height. Aesthetically, the city will lose a lot."

Instead, Vozny assures, they are currently looking for another solution. For example, the KP was instructed to provide for the purchase of herbs for Moorish lawns.

"The seeds consist of a mixture of different herbs that bloom at different times. This creates the effect of a lawn with different plant heights. Such a lawn does not need regular mowing, it is mowed several times a year. Of course, we will not be able to apply this principle throughout the city. First, we will start planting it in the areas along the roads that separate the sidewalk from the carriageway. So we will gradually move away from mowing," the ecologist explains.

Kyiv residents and guests of the capital will be able to see Moorish lawns in different areas of the city as early as 2023. After experimental research and analysis, they promise to scale up the initiative.

He also adds that lawns in the city space are still necessary, because in the capital there are public places where people like to relax on mowed grass, for example, Post Square or Slavy Park.

Urban meadows were planted on a plot in Vinnytsia. Now they decide whether to continue the experiment

"Another solution — on the slopes in the future, we want to abandon the use of lawns and plant them with ground cover junipers.

The juniper is evergreen, has a cool aesthetic appearance, creates a pleasant coniferous smell in the air. This is how we want to strengthen the slopes and move away from regular mowing," Vozniy notes and explains that the initiative will be implemented gradually due to a lack of funding.
