Mayor Serhiy Sukhomlyn announced this idea in a video message on November 9.
"Yes, we all studied Pushkin in school in our childhood, there was a whole section "Russian literature", and in Zhytomyr this monument, which stands on the (Old) boulevard, was once made by a Zhytomyr sculptor Olishkevich. To demolish or not to demolish? To shoot or not to shoot? And here several ideas arose.
First, you really need to shoot. At one time, these monuments were the same throughout the Soviet Union. Pushkin, other prominent military figures of the Russian Empire. In fact, with the help of art, the empire "marked" its mental territory in this way, and said that it was its territory. Today, under the guise of all this, they are doing what they do in Ukraine," noted the mayor of Zhytomyr.
Next, Sukhomlin offered the townspeople to choose the following options:
- Dismantle the sculpture of the Russian writer and deliver it to the local history museum.
- To exchange the monument for Ukrainians who were captured by the occupiers.

In addition, Sukhomlin said that now the commission dealing with the issue of renaming the streets of the city determines which toponyms need to be changed.
By the way, the bronze bust of Pushkin on a pedestal in Zhytomyr is the first historical monument and the third in the Russian Empire, erected in the city on donations from the townspeople. Its opening took place in 1899 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth. The authors of the object are the sculptor Henrikh Olishkevich and the architect Mykhailo Betaki.
