The complex is located in the Nanshan District, on the coast of Shenzhen Bay, write Dezeen.
According to the authors' plan, it should become not only a new center of design and culture, but also an open public space that connects the city with the embankment.
“Most of my projects are born from one question: can public space be more open and equal for everyone?” said the studio’s founder, Ma Yansung.
According to him, the site was completely washed out of the sea, and the architecture was supposed to transform the former natural landscape into an image of the future, while at the same time making the large-scale cultural structure comfortable for people.
The complex, surrounded by skyscrapers on one side and Talent Park on the other, contains exhibition galleries, educational spaces, a design library and a multi-purpose theater.
The main feature of the project was the undulating green roof, which hides most of the building underground and at the same time forms walking routes between the city and the coast.
The roof surface is lined with polished granite volumes resembling natural boulders. Their height gradually decreases from a 28-meter gallery near the city to a low domed structure next to the park.
The building was intentionally made low so that it would not interfere with the migratory routes of birds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
The underground galleries are designed in a minimalist style: the concrete structures are left open, and the engineering systems are integrated into the ceiling. One of the galleries is surrounded by a ring-shaped atrium, which provides natural lighting.
The complex features a shallow pond and an open space for concerts, art fairs, and festivals at its center. The landscaping is made of native plant species, and the slopes gradually merge into the natural landscape of the neighboring wetlands, without any hard boundaries between architecture and nature.
