Chinese artist Ai Weiwei to open exhibition in Kyiv

Chinese dissident, artist, and sculptor Ai Weiwei will present a large-scale installation "Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Military Camouflage Painted White" for the first time in Ukraine.

About this said RIBBON International platform on Instagram, which is the initiator of the project.

Ai Weiwei is one of the most influential artists in the world, whose works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the São Paulo Biennale of Contemporary Art, and who has spent his life fighting for social freedoms and against the dictatorial regime of his native China, from which he was forced to flee in the 1980s due to persecution by the authorities of his family.

“Located in the multidisciplinary cultural space of Pavilion 13, this new site-specific work is Ai Weiwei’s first commission in Ukraine. It stems from Ai Weiwei’s ongoing humanistic and pacifist interest in the experience of conflict—he draws on ideologically charged objects from the past to create art that resonates with the complexities of the present,” RIBBON International noted.

The installation “Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Military Camouflage Painted White” is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s “Divine Proportion.” Ai Weiwei reflects on the ideals of rationality of the Enlightenment and how these frameworks are embodied in a world shaped by conflict and concealment.

“This is the challenge — to create new works that relate to what I feel now, but also to me in the past and in the current situation. Art is more about the metaphysical. You can’t describe everything that exists, but you can always offer a gesture, an attitude or a certain symbolism from your side, a kind of poetic gesture,” the artist himself shared.

The exhibition arose from Ai Weiwei's interest in the phenomenon of war. It reflects his humanistic and pacifist beliefs.

It will open on September 14 and run until November 30, 2025.
