According to write Designboom, MVRDV's impressive three-sided floating building reflects the Wuhan landscape in its volume and spatial qualities. Its shape refers to the different heights of the surrounding buildings, and the design includes three impressive panoramic windows that overlook the city from different vantage points.
Each opening focuses on a specific view: the highest of the three windows overlooks the downtown skyline; a low wide window opens a panoramic view of the park opposite; and a long curved window hugs the adjacent square, inviting passers-by to peer into the library.
The Dutch architects developed an interior concept to emphasize Wuhan's position at the confluence of rivers, surrounded by an urban landscape. Stepped beechwood terraces mimic the sculptural lines of the canyon, and the first floor features a wide public space that visitors can use throughout the day.
The library is surrounded by a park, the tall trees of which provide cooling in places of intense sunlight. At the same time, the main public areas are shaded by the northwest corner of the building.
To reduce energy consumption, the facade includes bookshelf-shaped blinds that shade the interior. These blinds are denser in places that need the most protection from the sun. Solar panels integrated into the flowing form of the library roof provide the building with renewable energy.
