Kharkiv National University of Construction and Architecture was shelled twice by the Russian military: on March 2 and 8, 2022.
"On March 2, there was no direct hit to the university buildings. But the windows and doors of the SBU building, located nearby, were blown out by the flights. And on March 8, there was another shelling. Then there were two arrivals on the so-called new building, on Myronositskaya. Two floors collapsed," dean Vyacheslav Butskyi told the "Svoi Dim" platform.
The neighboring building of the university, which has historical value, also suffered significant destruction. There, the blast wave blew out the windows and gutted the stained glass windows
"The most important building on the Sumy side was built in 1927 according to the project of the famous Kharkiv architect Oleksandr Molokin. The building is an architectural monument of local significance," said Kharkiv architect Yevhenii Solovyov.
The Art Deco building at 40 Sumska Street was designed by Oleksandr Molokin in co-authorship with another architect, Georgy Ikonnikov, especially for Derzhstrakh. But after the Second World War, the Kharkiv Engineering and Construction Institute (now the Kharkiv National University of Construction and Architecture) moved into this space, because its building was destroyed. In the 1960s, a one-story lobby was built in the courtyard. Later, two more buildings of the university were built nearby.
"An architectural building adjoins this building from the Sumy side. It was built in the 80s. And there is also a post-war building from the 60s and 70s on the opposite side, from Myronosytska Street, which suffered the most in March 2022," continues architect Solovyov.
However, despite significant damage, the buildings of the construction university are subject to repair
"The roof and structures are damaged, everything is leaking, inside is a mess, the glass is broken. But the building on Myronositskaya is standing, so it is impossible to say that everything is irretrievably lost, it is necessary to tear it down and build a new one. If there is an initiative, money and desire, everything can be restored," assures Yevhenii Solovyov.
Since the shelling, the building on Myronosytskaya has not functioned, but on Sumy, despite the lack of heating and water supply, teachers were still working until recently, because students continue to study, albeit remotely.
On the "Svoy Dim" platform can be shared own memories of the destroyed home or the institution where they worked.
