UNESCO demands an immediate end to attacks on civilian objects and calls for the protection of Ukraine's cultural heritage

Appealing to his mandate, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization demands from the Russian Federation an immediate end to attacks on civilian objects: schools, universities, memorial objects, objects of cultural and communication infrastructure.

Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulet said, which fully agrees with the UN resolution regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Azoulet reminds that seven World Heritage sites are located in Lviv and Kyiv, seventeen more have been added to the preliminary list. Odesa and Kharkiv are also included in the network of UNESCO creative cities, and the national archives of Ukraine are included in the "Memory of Peace" register, as well as places dedicated to the tragedy of the Holocaust.

All these cultural values, according to the Hague Convention of 1954, are under the protection of the UN.

UNESCO warns that, in cooperation with UNITAR / UNOSAT, it will monitor the damage caused to cultural objects by analyzing satellite images.

In addition, representatives of the organization appeal to the authorities of Ukraine with a proposal to provide museums throughout the country with assistance in organizing the protection of collections.
