In addition, a meeting of the Organization's Committee in any other city "is impossible under the Russian presidency". This is is stated in an open letter to UNESCO member states.
This decision was made and signed by 46 countries belonging to the organization because of Russia's attack on Ukraine.
"The heritage of Kharkiv, a UNESCO City of Art, has paid a particularly high price, as has the center of Chernihiv, which is on the tentative list of Ukraine's World Heritage Sites. The horrific images of the bombing of the Mariupol Theater, witnessed by UNESCO on satellite images, are particularly evocative in our minds. And the damage continues," the statement said.
The letter also stated that the 45th session would not be postponed. It will be held on the same dates as planned before the war, but it is not yet known where the meeting of the participating countries will take place.
As a reminder, 46 countries have refused to refused to participate in this year's session of the World Heritage Committee because it is chaired by Russia.
In addition, the Ministry of Culture has repeatedly appealed to UNESCO to UNESCO with a request to expel Russia from the organization, which is waging a full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine and destroying its unique cultural heritage.
