In the central square of the Belgian city of Mechelen, it is planned to arrange green areas with fruit trees.

According to reported the The Mayor, the concept began to be developed in 2021.

The project envisages a green area next to St. Rumbold's Cathedral. However, instead of ordinary trees, fruit plants will be planted: berry bushes, grape vines, apple trees, as well as some herbs. The idea is that people will walk through the square and be able to pick any fruit, just like in a garden.

It will also help restore the local fauna. In particular, an orchard will attract small insects and birds. The project is implemented at the expense of a fine paid by the Flemish authorities to Greenpeace due to air pollution. Another 150 euros will be allocated by the local authorities.
