Japanese designer turns a ream of A4 paper into a portable lamp

Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa has unveiled the SIWA A4 Light, a limited edition portable lamp created for SIWA, a brand specializing in traditional Japanese washi paper. The object will be released in a limited edition of 100 pieces and will go on sale at the end of January 2026.

Fukasawa took the familiar shape of a standard 500-sheet A4 paper ream as the basis for his design. Instead of office paper, Naolon, a durable, waterproof washi-based material developed by manufacturer Onao, was used. As a result, a familiar everyday object has been transformed into a luminous object - monolithic, minimalist and at the same time sculptural, write Designboom.

Unlike the traditional approach, where paper serves only as a lampshade or shell, in SIWA A4 Light The paper itself becomes the main element of the design. "The appeal of a light object wrapped in paper is that the paper itself is the essence of the light," explains the designer.

The object measures 55 × 210 × 297 mm, weighs 800 grams and costs 55,000 yen (approximately $350).

The lamp comes with a special paper bag for storage and carrying, emphasizing the mobility of the object and the heritage of the brand, known for its soft, intricate paper products.
