Amorphous transparent objects will be presented to the winners of the first Art Basel Awards ceremony, which will take place in December in Miami Beach (USA) as part of Miami Art Week, write Dezeen.
“Every breath has its own form, just like every human thought,” explains the firm’s co-founder Jacques Herzog. “I like that glass, like clouds, can be perceived in different ways: sometimes you see shapes, sometimes you don’t. This endless variability reflects human creativity.”
Each award is hand-blown, so no two are exactly alike. Initially, the architects experimented with gold and smoke trails, but ultimately settled on a “pure expression”—clear, unadulterated glass that symbolizes universal beauty and freedom of interpretation.
The studio created the awards in collaboration with Swiss master glassblower Matteo Gone, the studio's founder. GlassworksThe work began with simple sketches that resembled interweaving smoke or clouds, and later evolved into tangible glass objects.
“When I was asked to design the award, it seemed quite unusual,” says the architect. “But the more I thought about it, the more interesting the idea became. Since this is Art Basel, it had to be really special—different from anything that had been done before.”
The Art Basel Awards is a new initiative of the international art fair Art Basel, launched in June 2025 to celebrate achievements in the field of contemporary art, design and culture.
