When Gustave Eiffel's classmate, engineer William Le Baron Jenna, designed the world's first skyscraper on a steel frame - the Housing Insurance Building in Chicago - he did not even imagine that a quarter of a century later, 10-story buildings would be called "medium-rise". Adrian Smith's Jeddah Tower is about to break the kilometer mark, and the transition from steel frames to carbon fiber exoskeletons is predicted to usher in a new generation of high-rise buildings.

In New York and London, they study how high-rises affect light and wind conditions, and also introduce new tower design rules aimed at creating comfortable conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. What about us? Can the vertical growth of cities solve such urgent problems as heavy traffic, shortage of affordable housing, deterioration of the ecological situation? Or, on the contrary, will it aggravate them? How justified is high-rise construction in the city center? Is it permissible to "stand up for the blue line", and if so, in what cases?

"The city from above" is how we formulated the main theme for the May volume of PRAGMATIKA.MEDIA. We discussed it with influential developers and architects, learned how they assess the prospects of vertical development of the city from their own experience.
