Erected in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was made of iron, so as a result of contact with water and oxygen in those places where the paint falls off due to age, the metal began to deteriorate. Currently, the building is in a dilapidated state - "in some places, rust eats away at it like termites eat a tree," the publication writes.
In 2018, the 20th "painting campaign" of the Eiffel Tower for the 2024 Olympic Games began. It included cleaning a third of the structure and applying two coats of new paint to prevent the effects of corrosion, which continue to build up. Later, the work had to be postponed due to the coronavirus, and later - due to the discovery of lead in the old paint.
Now the tower is awaiting "cosmetic" repairs, which will cover only 5% of the structure. The company Sete, which owns the monument, does not plan to close it for a long time for repairs, because "it will lead to a loss of income." As noted in the Sete representative office, the Eiffel Tower is the fourth most popular place in Paris after Disneyland, the Louvre and Versailles.
