Bunker House: Rethinking Security in Residential Construction by SENCE ARCHITECTS

SENCE ARCHITECTS presented a residential concept in response to the profound impact of the war on the lives of Ukrainians in the "Bunker House" project.

SENCE ARCHITECTS - Ukrainian architectural and design studio. They developed a new conceptual project to rethink trends in residential construction.

The architectural and spatial solutions at Bunker House have been designed to meet today's requirements. The facade of the house underwent a transformation. A large amount of glass gave way to a modified facade with a reduced number of glass elements, and the windows and doors were equipped with the most advanced shock wave protection systems.

Also, what once served as recreational areas such as movie theaters and gyms have now found a new purpose as fully equipped home bomb shelters. These shelters provide both convenience and security, offering residents a comfortable long-term shelter.

A carefully designed bomb shelter is equipped with essential amenities, including water and food supplies, bathrooms with showers, comfortable bedrooms with walk-in closets, and a well-equipped kitchen and dining room. In addition, the storage has an autonomous power supply system, radio and telephone communication, as well as two separate marked evacuation exits.

“By redefining safety in residential design, Bunker House embodies our desire to protect life. We sought to create housing that not only protects, but also takes care of the residents, offering a space where comfort coexists with security," says Iryna Petskovich, CEO of the SENCE ARCHITECTS studio.

The facades are insulated and decorated with decorative plastering, for more effective energy saving. Windows and doors are equipped with protective anti-shock films. For additional security measures, the windows are reinforced with reinforced protective shutters made of super-strong plywood, carefully painted with fire-resistant paint.

The entrances to the building and the bomb shelter are equipped with armored doors, which provides an impregnable fortress for the residents. Water is supplied from its own artesian well, and waste water is disposed of using an individual septic system.

The heating system combines heat pump technology with a low-temperature heating and cooling system comprising underfloor heating and warm/cool wall and ceiling panels.

The ventilation system in the bomb shelter works in two modes - clean ventilation and filter ventilation, providing optimal comfort thanks to the creation of separate ventilation zones for different areas of the house. To protect against poisonous substances, the storage is hermetically sealed and equipped with an anti-radiation protection system.
