The Shed cultural space project became the winner of the Architecture Awards 2022 - the competition for the best buildings according to the version of the American Institute of Architects. It was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro architectural studio together with Rockwell Group.
The Shed opened in New York in 2019. The building serves as a cultural space for artists and its visitors. Exhibitions and theater performances are held here almost every day.

The art space complex consists of two parts: an eight-story building with an area of 1718 square meters and an ergonomic McCourt hall.
In the first, a large number of galleries, the "Griffin" theater with 500 seats, rehearsal halls and workshops for artists were located. McCourt Hall serves as a venue for large-scale events and large-scale installations.
The main feature of the art center is that the McCourt hall can be increased almost twice - a retractable roof was installed here, which rolls out of the main building with the help of special rails.
This mobile structure has the form of a steel diagonal frame with translucent panels made of ETFE polymer material, which has the same thermal insulation properties as double-glazed windows.
This is how the building transformation process takes place:
When the McCourt slide-out is once again integrated with the main body, it is used as an open outdoor space.
The Shed building is called an exemplary example of interactive architecture, because with its spatial solution it gives an impetus to expand the creative scope of artists.
