"We decided to remove almost all Russian and Soviet writers who had no relation to Odesa (Blok, Sholokhov, Garshin, Griboyedov, Chernyshevsky, etc.). Almost all streets named after Soviet and Russian figures are being renamed, for example, Tsiolkovsky, Vasnetsov, Shishkin, Michurin...
We removed all the terrorist patriots: Kibalchich, Zasulych, Figner... Dmitry Donskoi, Nevsky, Nakhimov, Kutuzov, Leaders, Dezhnev, Yermak will leave the city... We will get rid of a very large number of marshals, generals and simply legends of the Second World War - Kosmodemyanska, Matrosova , Gastelo, Dovatora... At the same time, they made an exception for those generals who really defended and liberated Odesa - Petrov, Malinovsky, Bocharov and a few others," Babich explains.
By the way, a separate decision was made for each street. The recommendations were submitted to the city council, which must approve them at the session. The historical and toponymic commission will consider new toponyms at the next meeting.
"For now, we continue to accept ideas from historians, activists, residents of Odesa. There is a great desire to change the toponymic image of the city. To make it more Ukrainian and multicultural, removing the Russian narrative," concluded Mr. Oleksandr.
